Comprehensive victory for women’s team

Jess Waplington’s hat-trick helped the Spireites to a crushing 9-0 win against Staveley MW reserves in the Derbyshire County Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Milly Wheldon’s double, as well as goals from Amy Nowell, Millie Standen, Evie Carter and Romy Sheppard, completed the rout as Chesterfield made it seven wins in a row.

Manager Pete Jarvis was delighted with his side’s performance as the team continues to go from strength to strength.

Jarvis said: “I’m really pleased with the performance today. We gained momentum after the first goal and showed a really good attitude from that point on.”

After last weekend’s comprehensive 6-1 win in the League Cup, Chesterfield started this County Cup game in a similarly dominant fashion.

There were a host of early chances in the opening 20 minutes for the home side, with Sophie Marshall and Carter testing Erin Rodgers.

Chesterfield continued to probe, and with 23 minutes played, took a deserved lead.

Nowell, who is known for her aerial dominance from set-pieces, proved just as useful with her feet as she controlled from the corner and slotted her finish under Rodgers.

On the half-hour mark, the Spireites made it two.

Marshall managed to draw a foul in the area, and from the resulting spot kick, Standen sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

The floodgates were well and truly open when Waplington made it 3-0 just four minutes later.

Initially not flagged as a goal, the referee soon pointed to the centre circle as the striker’s header was adjudged to have crossed the line.

Carter grabbed the fourth in the 39th minute.

The young forward raced past her marker and drilled a clinical strike into the bottom left corner.

At the break, the game was all but finished, and Pete Jarvis made a host of changes.

The substitutes almost had an instant impact when Sheppard struck the post, and Wheldon saw her effort fly just over the bar.

Standen and Waplington both had opportunities to make it five, until in the 67th minute, the elusive fifth finally arrived.

Wheldon beat the offside trap and steadied herself before calmly slotting past Rodgers.

Waplington then saw her effort from range strike the bar, but it wasn’t long until she claimed her second.

With 78 minutes played, she took aim from the edge of the area and powered home into the roof of the net.

Less than a minute later, Wheldon grabbed her brace when she poked the ball past the keeper and rolled it into an empty net.

Sheppard’s effort since coming off the bench was finally rewarded as she made it eight with a close-range finish.

And then to wrap up the game and her hat-trick, Waplington threw her body at the ball at the far post, and Rodgers was unable to claw it off the line.

Next up for the Spireites is a return to league action when they face Wellingborough Town on November 23.

Ahead of next weekend’s game, Jarvis said: “We’re in a better place now than we were in the previous league games; we’ve managed to work on some tactical tweaks over these cup games.

“Everybody in the squad has got that fitness and sharpness back, and it now provides excellent competition for places.”
