The academy team from Chesterfield FC Women overcame Farsley Celtic in an incredible 7-0 away win. Braces from Lexie Butterworth, Kate Thompson, and Millie Pinkney, along with a goal from Leah Harrison saw Chesterfield breeze past their opponents.
Butterworth opened the scoring early on. She was played through down the right-hand side and tapped the ball into the net.
It got even better for Butterworth when she netted her second of the match. Thompson, who was named Player of the Match after a brilliant performance, found Butterworth, who was on hand to turn the ball home.
The first-half domination was rewarded with a third goal. Pinkney found herself on the edge of the Farsley Celtic box and scooped the ball brilliantly just over the goalkeeper into the top left corner of the net.
In the second half, the fantastic Spireites performance continued. Thompson got a goal of her own when she sent a powerful shot past the goalkeeper at the front post to make it 4-0.
Thompson then scored Chesterfield’s fifth soon after. She drove down the right flank and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.
It was 6-0 to Chesterfield after a fantastic move. Good combination play between Thompson and Pinkney allowed the latter in and she strode forward and added her second goal of the game.
The scoring was completed when Thompson’s free-kick was spilled by the goalkeeper, allowing Harrison to nod home the seventh goal.
Holly Allcock, who produced a solid performance in the victory, said: “I think it was a good performance. We stayed composed and did not lose concentration. I feel like I did alright myself.”
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Allcock spoke with confidence about the team’s chances.
“I feel like we could definitely win the league,” she said. “When you look at the fixtures, I think we are one of the better teams. As long as we keep our heads, we can keep winning.”
