Danny Webb ahead of Fleetwood fixture

Assistant manager Danny Webb sat down with the media on Friday morning to preview the fixture against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Providing final thoughts on the midweek victory over Grimsby Town, Webb said: “We’ve had a few of those performances, but probably not as many as we’d like, especially at home in recent months.

“I think we probably all needed that sort of night, especially after the Tranmere game. We needed that sort of rejuvenation in the sort of vibe and the energy. Although our form recently has actually been very good in terms of five wins out of the last seven.

“I think the Saturday game just brought a flatness to everyone, didn’t it? It just felt a little bit flat. But, walking around the town on Wednesday and bumping into supporters, and you could see how buzzing they all were, like we all were. Because it was great.”

Webb also commented on the final run-in of the regular League Two season, explaining: “We’ve beaten last year’s (points tally), so that’s an improvement. And we were outside the play-offs, weren’t we, this time last year? But this time, we’re in them.

“It’s in our hands to stay in those playoffs and get as high as we can in that league table and finish ideally near that top three. But we’ve been here before, and we’ve got to make sure that the standards and the energy doesn’t drop going at Fleetwood because Matt and his staff will want to finish their season on a high at Fleetwood.

“You’d rather be chased than be the chaser. That’s what I’d always say. Because if you’re chasing, you can win and look at other people’s results, and it doesn’t make a difference. As I said earlier, it will be in our hands. We’ve got some experienced lads in that dressing room.”

Looking ahead to the weekend’s opponents, Webb commented: “They’ve got some very good players. Very good players. They’re a team that goes with two up front normally, and those two are normally a handful.

“They’ll want to finish in the top half of the table. We’ve got to be ready for balls in the box and runs in behind, whilst knowing that when we get the ball, let’s play our stuff. Let’s play some attacking football and get our supporters singing like we did the other night.

“They’ll want to finish in the top half of the table. We’ll go there as favourites. We’ll take a load of supporters, I’m sure, and make a load of noise, and it’s important we don’t leave disappointed.”
