Development side reach first senior cup final for women’s section

A superb team performance from a young academy development side against Rotherham United saw them win 2-0 to reach the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Cup Final.

With a team comprising of academy players, the Spireites made a bright start against a side who played in the same league as our first team last season.

After a series of corners, it was Allcock who hit a post following some superb work from Pinkney.

Rotherham applied some pressure late in the half as the two sides went into the interval on level terms.

The young Spireites started the second half with real intent and after long-range efforts from Harrsion and Butterworth, it was Alcock who latched onto a superb through ball from keeper Stocks to hold off a defender and fire home in style on 62 minutes.

Academy players Pinkney, Harrison, Butterworth, Cowperthwaite, Alcock and Watts all started to dominate the game. This led to the second goal on 72 minutes from talisman Butterworth who, from 25 yards, scored her 33rd goal of the season to extend the lead.

The young Spireites stayed in command and U16 players Stocks, Bramley and Beer all contributed to a dominant display.

On the final whistle, the Spireites celebrated reaching their first ever senior final.
