A second-half comeback saw the Spireites come back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 against Bradford City at the SMH Group Stadium with Liam Mandeville scoring a stoppage-time equaliser.
Bobby Pointon and Antoni Sarcevic gave the promotion-chasers an early two-goal lead before Jenson Metcalfe halved the deficit in first-half added time.
Alex Pattison added a third for Bradford early in the second half; Will Grigg and Mandeville both got onto the scoresheet to earn a point for the Blues.
Two changes were made to the side that came away from AFC Wimbledon with a goalless draw on Friday; Ryan Colclough and Grigg replaced Ollie Banks and Bim Pepple.
The opening exchanges were frantic as Chesterfield looked to make a perfect start. However, Bradford snuffed the attack out and countered before Pattison’s effort was parried away by Ryan Boot.
Ten minutes in, the away side did find the opener. Pattison’s through ball found Pointon, who rolled the ball in, via the far-post, from a tight angle.
Bradford were given another chance to score just eight minutes later when Tom Naylor brought down Sarcevic in the penalty area. The midfielder took the responsibility and converted his penalty down the middle of the goal.
The visitors continued to look the most likely to get the next goal with Paul Cook’s side frustrated because of decisions from referee Scott Jackson.
With ten minutes until the break, the Spireites began to pressure the Bradford back-line; Colclough’s low drive glanced off the wrong side of a post.
Michael Olakigbe’s cross found Naylor in the penalty area, but the midfielder skewed an effort, on the turn, wide of the mark.
As first half added time ticked away, Metcafle received the ball at the edge of the area and curled a beautiful effort past Sam Walker and in off a post
The second half started in the same way as the first – with some early action.
Pointon was denied a second of the afternoon early on after his toe-poke was tipped around a post by Boot.
Three minutes later, the away side once more extended their lead. Tayo Adaramola’s cross found the head of Pattison, who powerfully put away his effort.
On the hour-mark, Sarcevic almost added another to Bradford’s tally as his volley whistled just wide.
With just under 20 minutes to go, Metcalfe threaded a ball through to Grigg and the striker round Sam Walker before rolling the ball into an empty net.
Both teams looked to add to their tally for the afternoon with Naylor and Paddy Madden going close for the home side as well as Tommy Leigh putting a chance wide for the away team.
Two minutes into seven minutes of additional time, Mandeville was able to poke home from close-range to level the scores and setup a grand-stand finish.
Unfortunately, the Spireites would have to settle for a draw and stay three points off seventh place.
