Danny Webb and Jamie Grimes both reflected on Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
The assistant manager was impressed with the squad.
He said: “I thought we held our own against a top Premier League side; they’re at the top for a reason and those players are some of the best.
“It was a good run out for us, I thought we gained a lot from it.
“The most important thing was the fitness; we came off with no injuries, which was the most important thing.
“It’s all eyes on Alfreton now and the next few pre-season games but I thought today was an excellent challenge for us.”
Captain Grimes has supported Forest since he was a young boy but Saturday’s clash was the first time he had faced Forest in his career.
“It was great to play against them,” he said.
“Obviously it’s always a little more special playing against the team you support so I did enjoy it.
“I was focused on the task though and I thought we held our own quite well.
“They’re a top side; today was all about the fitness.
“We played some good stuff at times and I do think we’ll only get better; the new lads are fantastic and we’re all bonding well.
“We look forward to the next game now as the season slowly approaches.”
