Emphatic victory for women’s team

Captain Millie Standen’s hat-trick fired the Spireites to an emphatic 8-0 League Cup victory against Newark Town on Sunday, with the opponents down to ten players….

Evie Carter, Amy Nowell, Chloe Foster and Jess Waplington also got on the scoresheet as Chesterfield cruised through to the next round.

Manager Pete Jarvis made three changes to the side that won 1-0 away at Stamford last weekend, with a couple of players carrying knocks going into the game.

From the first whistle, Chesterfield, who are a division above today’s opponents, stamped their authority on the tie. And it took only five minutes for them to take the lead.

A relentless high press forced the Newark defender into a slack pass, which found Carter, and the striker coolly slotted home.

Less than two minutes later, the lead was doubled. The referee pointed to the spot after a Newark handball, and Standen’s spot kick had too much power for Georgia Porter.

Nowell headed in a third for Chesterfield three minutes later, with the tie already beginning to look like a forgone conclusion.

With just 15 minutes played, the referee again pointed to the spot, this time after Foster was brought down.

Again, Standen stepped up and never looked in doubt as she made it 4-0.

Shortly after, Kelly Fidler had an opportunity to make it five when she latched onto the goalkeeper’s loose touch, but her effort skidded just wide.

However, the Spireites didn’t have to wait long for their fifth when Waplington was the first to a rebound, and finished from close range on the half-hour mark.

Less than 60 seconds later, and it was six. From kick-off, Carter drove through on goal and unselfishly laid the ball off to Foster to roll into the empty net.

After the break, the hosts employed damage control tactics as they dropped deeper.

Chesterfield still created chances through Foster, Nowell, and Standen, but were denied by a combination of excellent goalkeeping and wayward shooting.

Newark’s afternoon went from bad to worse when they were reduced to ten players in the 58thminute for continued dissent even after being sin-binned.

Carter made the player advantage count three minutes later when she powerfully headed home Elin Morin’s deep cross.

Foster then had two chances of her own, the first was well saved, and the second crashed off a post after excellent skill in the build-up.

With five minutes left to play, Standen got Chesterfield’s eighth of the afternoon and completed her hat-trick with a volley from the centre of the box.

This was the last act of the day as the Spireites sailed through to the next round of the League Cup with an 8-0 win.
