“I love Chesterfield, my family love Chesterfield and I’m happy here”

In today’’s pre-match press conference, manager Paul Cook was questioned about his motives behind signing a new deal with the club.

He revealed his love for the club as well as his delight in extending his stay.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign my new contract. Plenty of people thought I was mad when I came back here, but I always loved the club.

“I always followed the club, and it hurt me to see the club drop out of the Football League. I wanted to come back and help because I loved my time here.

“I’m delighted to extend my stay. It’s an extremely well-run club, and that’s vital to me. We’re building something here. We’re looking to climb, and we’re looking to grow.”

The gaffer also expressed where he’d like to see the club progress.

“I want to get the club back to the level we were at when I left last time, and that was knocking on the door of the Championship,” he said.

“We’re not on a jet there, though – it will take time. If we can go any further than that, then great. We have a plan, but plans take time. We’re building slowly.

“I think it’s great when you have a plan, but it doesn’t mean it’s going to work! We’re not naive, and we understand what it’s going to take.

“Football is a funny old game, and anything can happen, but the important factor is that we’re doing things the right way.

“I love Chesterfield, my family loves Chesterfield, and I’m happy here.

“Everyone at the club is pulling in the right direction, so let’s see what we can achieve over time. But that’s the key – it’s going to take time, and we all have to stick together through it.

“We all have to support the club and stick together, and more success will come.”
