“I’m excited to be here”

Chesterfield welcomed their ninth summer signing to the SMH Group Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, with Ronan Darcy signing for the club on a season-long loan from Wigan Athletic.

Upon linking up with the squad, he said: “I’m over the moon; it’s come round quite quick.

“With the way he (Paul Cook) wants to play and things like that, it suits me. I’m excited to be here.

“The gaffer said to enjoy my football and the style he plays is something that I enjoy. Hopefully he can bring the best out of me.

“We’ve had a tough day of training and it’s hitting the legs now and the lads are a great group. There are some very talented players in there, so it looks exciting.”

Darcy earned promotion to League One with Crawley Town in the 2023/24 season, and he spoke about the experience he gained from the success.

“It was very good,” he said. “It’s probably one of the highs of my career so far. The football (we played) there is very similar to what it will be here and we achieved promotion, which we’re hoping to achieve here too.”

Describing himself as a player, he added: “I’ll always give my all, no matter what.

“I like to be very creative and I think the way we’re going to play and the style that the manager wants will hopefully bring the best out of me.”
