“It’s going to be a really, really good atmosphere”

Danny Webb spoke to 1866 Sport ahead of the Spireites’ Carabao Cup first round tie against local rivals Mansfield Town at the SMH Group Stadium on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

Looking ahead to the game, Webb said: “I don’t need to try and big it up to all the supporters, do I? It has been seven years since we played them last, and they won that game. So, it’d be nice to not only beat our rivals, but get our own back on a team that beat us last time we played.

“A lot of the big teams come in; all the Premier League teams come in a lot in the second round. So that could be a great day out for the fans. But I think initially this is a game that our supporters have been waiting for a long time.

“It’s going to be a really, really good atmosphere, and probably a much better atmosphere than it would be at any other Carabao Cup in the country that night.”

This will be Webb’s first encounter against Mansfield, in his time with the Spireites. He said: “People are always going to get excited for a game like this.

“I think the only thing different from normal home games will be a little bit more toxicity in the air from both sets of fans, which sometimes can be very exciting – it gets the hairs on the back of your neck standing up.”

Looking at the opposition bench, Webb commented on coming up against Nigel Clough, saying: “He’s obviously been hugely successful as a manager over the years and is very experienced. They’ve lost two games and I’m sure it’s a game that Nigel will aim to get his team back on track.”

Webb praised the Spireites supporters as a bumper crowd is expected, commenting: “I think most league games at home this season will break the 7,500 barrier and that’s with a lot of teams not bringing many supporters. Everybody in the club really does appreciate it and doesn’t take it for granted.

“Whether it’s home or away, the backing is there. You can’t help but appreciate when they’re so loud. It was 700 or 800 at Cheltenham, which is a long way.:

Reflecting on the 2-0 victory on Saturday, Webb said: “It was a good win and nice to go another game, albeit only two, with not only another set of three points, but a clean sheet. We were solid whilst playing some really attractive football, so it was the perfect day at the office.”

When asked about any injury news, Webb added: “Luckily nothing’s come out of Saturday, in terms of new injuries. John Fleck is available for selection if called upon.

“Devan Tanton is still with Fulham, running on the grass with the physio and he won’t be ready yet but he’s progressing well. In terms of knocks and niggles, we haven’t really had any the last two games.”
