Our thoughts are with the family and friends of lifelong supporter John Stone, who sadly passed away recently at the age of 80.
John regularly attended games as a child with his dad, Fred Stone. As an adult, he would finish his shift at Robinsons in Brampton and run up Foljambe Road to Saltergate to make it in time for kick-off. When he wasn’t at work, he’d take sons Mark, Michael and Matthew to the match and also coached their Sunday league team, Spinny Wood.
Into the 90s, he introduced his grandchildren, Luke and Thomas, to Chesterfield FC. From 2001, they had season tickets with him on Compton Street, where he sat near the half-way line. Later, in the 2010s, grandson Dijon also had a season ticket with grandad.
In later years, another generation of Stones have been introduced to Chesterfield FC, thanks to John. Great grandchildren Poppy Stone and Nathaniel Lawrence-Foster regularly attend games and have done for a few years with grandad. In recent years, his brothers, David Stone and Peter Stone have also attended the games regularly.
John is survived by two of his three sons; Mark and Michael (his other son, Matthew, sadly passed away in 2022), brothers David and Peter, grandchildren Luke, Thomas, Shannon, Ellie, Leo and Dijon and great grandchildren Poppy, Nathaniel, Elena, Myles and Lucas.
John was a huge football fan, watching any game that he could on TV and the highlight of his week was always watching his beloved Spireites.
