Chesterfield first-team coach Kieron Dyer sat down with the media on Friday morning to preview the away fixture against Accrington Stanley on Saturday afternoon.
Dyer started off with his final thoughts on Tuesday’s loss to Oldham Athletic, saying: “They ran all over us. It’s painful to say, but it looked like they wanted it more than us; that was the most disappointing thing.
“It doesn’t matter what shape we’d have played in midweek; if we’re not at it 100% and we don’t win our individual battles and do the basics, then we were always going to be struggling. And fair play to Oldham, they won all their battles.”
“There’s been a lot of home truths said. Obviously, we review games, good and bad. Notts County, we classed as a really good performance; Bristol Rovers, we classed as a really good away performance.”
When asked about the potential for another high-scoring game against Stanley, Dyer said: “You look at last season when we beat them in the last game of the season, it was 1-0. I’d take a 1-0 rather than a 4-3. As I said, we need to be based on more clean sheets.
“We need to win the game. We’ve had a really tough two days because everyone’s hurting. But, as I said, we’re fed up of talking now. We’ve got to start doing it, start showing it. So, hopefully, it starts on Saturday.”
Will Grigg was forced off after 20 minutes in midweek. On the striker’s injury, Dyer explained: “Grigg was a big blow. He’s done his hamstring, which is poor timing. It probably just sums up his season at the moment, where he hasn’t quite got up to speed.
“He’s obviously devastated, as are we. But we’ve got to do without him. We’ve got to come up with a plan of winning the game on Saturday.
“Freddie (Ladapo) went for another scan. It’s still not right to come back, but he’s doing everything in his power to get back as quickly as possible. Because, obviously, the injury to Grigg leaves us really short in that area.”
