2023/24 SEASON

Salford City had a fairly inconsistent start to the 2023/24 season with six wins in their first 16 league games – this run included seven defeat and three draws. The Ammies would then not find a win for the rest of 2023, which would lead to the dismissal of Neil Wood. Karl Robinson was named as his replacement and had a decent start to his tenure as he led the team to an eight-game unbeaten streak. Unfortunately for Salford, they would only record three more wins until the end of the season as they finished in a very disappointing 20th place.

MANAGER

Karl Robinson’s first job in management was a massive success, a six-year stint with MK Dons. During that time, he led the club to promotion to the Championship in 2015. He left the club in October 2016 before becoming manager of Charlton Athletic just a month later. Robinson’s spell at The Valley didn’t quite work out but his time at Oxford United was a little more successful. The U’s reached the League One play-offs in back-to-back season but came up short both times. In 2023, the former midfielder left Oxford and joined Leeds United as Sam Allardyce’s assistant. Robinson would become Salford City manager in January 2024.

KEY PLAYER

One of Salford City’s summer signings, Cole Stockton, is no stranger to finding the back of the net, finding his best from during his time at Morecambe. After a slow start to life at Burton Albion last season, the striker enjoyed a loan spell at Barrow in the second half of the campaign.

PLAYED FOR BOTH

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe joined Chesterfield on loan from Sheffield Wednesday in January 2015 on an initial youth loan – the move was made permanent soon after. The striker struggled for goals early on in his career as he mainly made appearances from the bench. After a loan at Mansfield Town and 29 appearances for the Spireites, Dieseruvwe left the club at the end of the 2015/16 season.

In May 2017, Dieseruvwe joined Salford City after leaving Kidderminster Harriers. The forward scored the first goal in the Ammies’ 3-0 National League play-off final win against AFC Fylde in 2019 and also scored the club’s first goal in the EFL. Dieseruvwe scored 18 times in 100 appearances before joining Tranmere Rovers in June 2021.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

The two sides have only met the three times with two of those games coming during the 2018/19 season. Both teams earned a win each before the Spireites won the third meeting in the FA Cup.

PREVIOUS GAME

In December 2021, Salford City and Chesterfield met at the Peninsula Stadium in the second round of the FA Cup. Liam Mandeville put the National League side ahead against the League Two side in the first half with a stunning 25-yard strike. The tie was put beyond all doubt with just under ten minutes to go as Jim Kellermann squeezed the ball beyond Tom King from a tight angle. The Spireites went on to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the third round.
