Adam Rooney joined Chesterfield on a four-month loan from Stoke City on deadline day in August 2006. The forward scored seven times in his 24-game spell at Saltergate. He returned to Stoke in January 2007.
In the summer of 2018, Salford City made headline news by announcing the signing of Rooney from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee. He scored 23 times in his first season as he helped the club win promotion to League Two via the National League play-offs. After one more season at the Peninsula Stadium, Rooney left to join Solihull Moors.
