Paul Cook spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow night’s game against Doncaster Rovers. He began with a reflection on the transfer window, saying: “We had more than one deal done in the last couple of days where we were going to pay a transfer fee to bring players in and more than one have failed medicals amongst the different stuff that goes on in football.
“Really disappointed for our supporters, disappointed for the players. But the most important thing when you’re signing players is that you’re signing them with the right intention, the best intention, to make your team better, to make your club better.
“Phil and Ash Kirk have been a great support as always. In terms of a blame situation, there’s no one to blame, it’s football. We physically couldn’t have done any more, so we have to move on, we have to concentrate now on the remainder of this season, which can still be positive.”
Going into tomorrow’s game, he added: “We should never have lost at Cheltenham on Saturday. It’s not good enough from us.
“We didn’t really have that moment where we put Cheltenham to the sword, but we were in no trouble in the game, none. To come away losing the game – that effect of losing has a mental impact on everyone because you feel you’ve done something wrong, you feel you’re not going to get where you want to be.
“When you leave the pitch after beating Bromley on the Tuesday, you feel the total opposite. Those emotions we felt after Bromley are the same emotions we need to be feeling after Doncaster.
“Grant (McCann) will obviously be disappointed that they never went up through the play-offs last season, but they’re flying this year, they’re a really strong team and great credit goes to Grant and the staff.
“He’s a very experienced manager. They are on a great run, why wouldn’t they be coming here full of confidence?
“We’ve got to grasp that now, to regain our confidence levels to lead us to being a better team. The only way to do that is winning games; it’s points on the board, it’s scoring goals, it’s the emotion that you feel when you win.
“Tomorrow night, as always, should be a good game, there’ll be a really good crowd in and Doncaster travel in fine form. For us now, we need to win football games if we want to be successful this year.”
