Match preview: Accrington Stanley (a)

The Spireites’ final game of the regular season sees them travel to the Wham Stadium to take on Accrington Stanley.

A win for Paul Cook’s side and Salford City failing to win at Carlisle United will secure a first EFL play-off tie for the Blues since 2015.

Accrington stamped their place in League Two for the 2025/26 season with a 1-0 win over Walsall last weekend.

Head-to-head

In the 16 fixtures between the two sides, Chesterfield have won five times compared to Accrington Stanley’s nine. This also includes two draws.

The Blues have never won at the Crown Ground/Wham Stadium, with all five victories coming at Saltergate or the SMH Group Stadium.

Stanley won the previous meeting between the two sides, coming away from North Derbyshire with a 3-0 victory back in November.

Manager – John Doolan

John Doolan’s playing career was spent mostly in non-league, apart from a spell at Wigan Athletic, before ending his playing time at Accrington Stanley.

After hanging up his boots, the Liverpudlian was a part of both the Liverpool and Everton academies before joining Wigan, this time as a youth-team coach.

Doolan also had stints at Hibernian and Rotherham United before returning to Accrington Stanley in 2017 as a first-team coach.

The 56-year-old was handed the manager’s job on an interim basis in March 2024 before being given the job on a permanent basis that same month.

Player-in-focus

Tyler Walton joined the club in the summer of 2024 from National League North outfit Southport.

After stints in the Manchester City, Leeds United and Barnsley academies, the attacker started his professional career out at York City.

He would also play for Frickley Athletic and Farsley Celtic before moving to Southport – where he caught the attention of EFL clubs.

In Walton’s first season at League Two level, he has scored nine times and provided eight assists in an attacking role. This includes three goals in the FA Cup as Accrington made the third round before bowing out against Liverpool.
