Match preview: Bristol Rovers (a)

Stadium

The Spireites start February by making the long journey down to the Memorial Stadium to take on Bristol Rovers.

Chesterfield will hope to close the gap to those in the play-off places with a first win at Bristol Rovers since 1964.

On the other hand, Steve Evans’ side have won two on the bounce as they hope to continue to move away from the drop zone.

In the Spotlight

Fabrizio Cavegn has been an obvious standout for Bristol Rovers this season since joining from FC Vaduz in the summer.

He started this campaign with his previous club, playing in a Europa Conference League qualifier against Dungannon.

The forward has scored 14 goals in his first 36 games in England, including a hat-trick against Shrewsbury Town in January.

Cavegn operates mostly as a striker but can also play out on the left and through the centre of the attacking midfield.

The gaffer’s record

Paul Cook has a positive record against Bristol Rovers, recording eight wins in 12 competitive meetings.

He also has two draws and two defeats against Rovers, with three of those results coming in his first four games against the side.

With Chesterfield, Cook has won his last two fixtures against the Bristol outfit by a scoreline of 3-1.

Man in the middle

Matthew Russell has taken charge of six previous matches involving Chesterfield, and four including Bristol Rovers.

The Spireites have recorded three wins and three draws in those fixtures – all of which came in the National League.

A 1-1 draw against Oldham Athletic and a 4-2 win against Barnet during the 2023/24 season were the last time he officiated a game involving the Blues.

Paul Cook’s thoughts

“Bristol Rovers, you don’t need me to tell them, shouldn’t be down where they are in the league. They’ve got far too many good players, great fanbase, great support, really good matchday experience.

“We’ve got our hands full, so have they. We are going there to give a very front-footed, aggressive performance. That’s what our supporters demand, and I am trying to hope that’s what they’ll get tomorrow.”
