Match preview: Doncaster Rovers (h)

The Spireites will face Doncaster Rovers at the SMH Group Stadium this evening, in a fixture that was originally scheduled for Saturday, February 8.

Doncaster’s continued involvement in the FA Cup, being drawn at home against Premier League outfit Crystal Palace, meant that the fixture had to be rearranged. Doncaster made it into round four after a penalty shoot-out victory against Hull City.

Doncaster currently sit second in League Two, within the automatic promotion places, and have won their last four games.

Head-to-head
The Spireites ran out 3-0 winners in the reverse fixture earlier this season, after goals from Chey Dunkley, Paddy Madden and James Berry.

Before this season, the last time Chesterfield faced Doncaster was in the 2015/16 season. Rovers won 3-0 in the first meeting that season, at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Later in that campaign, the two sides drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture, after Gboly Ariyibi cancelled out an early goal from the visitors.

Manager – Grant McCann
Now in his second spell at Doncaster Rovers, McCann was appointed as manager in May 2023.

It was a tough start to life back at Doncaster for McCann, as his side were 22nd in League Two in February 2024. He led them on a ten-game winning run, spreading over March and April 2024, which equalled a club record, as they made it into the play-offs.

McCann first managed Doncaster from June 2018 to June 2019 and led the South Yorkshire side to the League One play-offs, where they were knocked out by Charlton Athletic.

Player-in-focus
Luke Molyneux has starred for Doncaster this season, featuring in 28 of their 29 games in League Two.

The attacking midfielder has netted ten league goals, already matching his tally from the 2023/24 campaign, scoring twice in a recent win against Barrow.

The 26-year-old also scored in Doncaster’s FA Cup third round upset against Championship side Hull City.
