Match preview: Fleetwood Town (a)

The Spireites head into their Boxing Day fixture in solid form, despite the injury crisis at the club, taking on Fleetwood Town who have won just once in their last 11 fixtures.

Pete Wilde has been named as Fleetwood’s new manager, replacing Charlie Adam who had been in charge of the Cod Army for just over a year, entering the dugout on New Year’s Eve 2023.

After failing to keep them in League One, an underwhelming start to life back in League Two sees them sit 18th in the table after a ten-season spell in the third tier.

Head-to-head

Since the first meeting between the sides in 2012, the Spireites have won five, drawn three and lost five against Fleetwood, three of which have come in the last three meetings.

The last match between the sides came in the Football League Trophy in December 2017, when Fleetwood took a 2-0 home win thanks to goals from Jack Sowerby and Alex Reid.

The last win for Chesterfield came at Highbury in 2015, as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake netted a 30th minute winner to give the Spireites a 1-0 win in the 2015/16 League One campaign.

In his 12 fixtures against Fleetwood, Paul Cook has suffered just two defeats, winning eight times.

His most emphatic victory came as Wigan manager in April 2018, when a goal from Chey Dunkley contributed to a 4-0 away victory for the Latics.

Player-in-focus

Ronan Coughlan has netted eight times in all competitions for Fleetwood, contributing to a quarter of their league goals this season.

After successful 2023 with Waterford in the Irish Premier Division, scoring 33 times in 29 games, Coughlan signed for Fleetwood in January and will have a big role to play if they are to shift upwards and look for a return to League One.
