Match preview: Notts County (a)

The Spireites head into a big fixture at Meadow Lane off the back of two wins against Newport County and Salford City, returning to good form after a difficult spell.

The 4-0 away win at the Peninsula was Chesterfield’s first win on the road since the victory over Carlisle United back in December, a much needed end to the run ahead of a tough trip down the M1.

Head-to-head

In the reverse fixture at the SMH Group Stadium, the Magpies stole a point in the dying embers through a David McGoldrick penalty.

Every Spireite will remember the penalty shoot-out defeat at Wembley two years ago, a memory that provides all the more drive to get the three points against a team that is pushing for promotion in their second season back in the Football League.

Chesterfield’s last win in this fixture came in 2022 after a Laurence Maguire double and a late spot-kick from Akwasi Asante.

Stuart Maynard

After the departure of Luke Williams to Swansea City last season, Maynard left National League outfit Wealdstone to make the move north.

After a 14th-placed finish last term, Maynard’s men have progressed this season with a strong strike-force of Alassana Jatta and veteran David McGoldrick, currently sitting fourth in League Two.

Player-in-focus

Alassana Jatta was brought to Meadow Lane in the summer from Viborg in the Danish Superliga. He has had a very successful start to life as a Magpie, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, making him the joint top-goalscorer in the EFL alongside Richard Kone and Michael Cheek.

After scoring at the SMH Group Stadium earlier in the season, he will be a threat to Paul Cook’s side.
