Match preview: Port Vale (h)

The Spireites return to the SMH Group Stadium this afternoon to face Port Vale, off the back of a trip to Grimsby, which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

The Valiants have impressed so far thid season in League Two as they currently sit in third position, occupying the final automatic promotion place.

The year has started positively for Vale with two wins in three games, against fellow-promotion-hopefuls Doncaster Rovers and struggling Newport County.

Head-to-head

Earlier this season, an early Ethan Chislett goal was the only thing that separated Port Vale from the Spireites in a 1-0 win for the hosts at Vale Park.

The last four meetings between the two sides at the SMH Group Stadium have all resulted in a Spireites win.

Goals from Kristian Dennis and Jordan Sinnott secured the 2-0 victory in August 2017, the last time Chesterfield hosted Port Vale.

Manager – Darren Moore

The ex-Premier League boss began his managerial career at West Brom. after taking over for the final 11 games of the 2017/18 season, with the Baggies sat bottom of the top-flight. Moore impressed in the role, beating Manchester United 1-0, but could not prevent relegation to the Championship.

Moore was appointed as permanent manager of West Brom, after impressing in his Premier League stint. After his dismissal, he was appointed manager of Doncaster Rovers for the 2019/20 season and the majority of the 2020/21 campaign.

The highlight of his managerial career came whilst he was the manager of Sheffield Wednesday. The League One play-off campaign of 2022/23 saw the Owls come back from a 4-0 loss in the first leg to win, before beating Barnsley 1-0 in the final to secure promotion to the Championship.

A brief spell at Huddersfield Town was his last job before becoming the Port Vale manager, mid-way-through last season. His side is now in pursuit of promotion from League Two.

Player-in-focus

Central midfielder Ryan Croasdale has featured in 25 games this season, scoring three and assisting twice.

Croasdale joined the Valiants this summer, on a two-year deal, and was voted their Player of the Month for August.

The 30-year-old played a key role in both of Stockport County’s promotions, from the National League and League Two.
