Match preview: Shrewsbury Town (a)

Stadium

The Spireites travel to the Croud Meadow to take on Shrewsbury Town in their last game before Christmas.

Paul Cook’s side will be hoping to record back-to-back victories and put some pressure on those above.

On the other hand, Shrewsbury will be in search of three points to move them away from the League Two relegation zone.

In the Spotlight

Sam Clucas is a name that Chesterfield fans will remember fondly despite spending just one season with the club.

He joined from Mansfield Town in the summer of 2014 before helping the Spireites finish in the League One play-offs that season.

The versatile midfielder made the move to Shrewsbury Town in May and has become an important part of the squad.

Mainly operating as a left wing-back, Clucas has scored two goals and provided six assists in his first 25 games for the Shrews.

The gaffer’s record

Paul Cook has previously come up against Shrewsbury Town five times in his managerial career.

None of those meetings were while he was in charge of the Spireites – one with Accrington Stanley, two with Wigan Athletic and two with Ipswich Town.

He has secured one win in those games. That came when Ipswich beat the Shropshire outfit 2-1 at Portman Road in October 2021.

Man in the middle

Paul Howard is the referee for the fixture and will take charge of his 14th game of the campaign.

His one game involving Chesterfield came back in the 2018/19 season – a 0-0 draw against Havant & Waterlooville.

Overall, he has refereed 221 matches, awarded 682 yellow cards and 24 red cards.

Danny Webb’s thoughts

“You look at their players, look at their team and the fact their manager has managed at a high level, and they’re down the wrong end of the league.

“You can look at their team, their start to the season and where they’re expected to be, but I guarantee Michael will have them revved up.”
