Match Preview | Swindon Town (A)

The Spireites make the journey to The Nigel Eady County Ground to face Swindon Town on Saturday afternoon, in a contest which will see both teams competing for the final League Two Play-off position.

Paul Cook’s side are on a seven-game unbeaten run that spans back to mid-March, which includes five victories. The most recent came at the SMH Group Stadium against Crewe Alexandra, in which a Lee Bonis brace saw the Spireites win 2-0.

Swindon are without a win in their last three, losing 4-0 to Grimsby Town last time out at Blundell Park. The home side must win to secure a play-off position.

In the Spotlight

Aaron Drinan has been Swindon’s talisman this season, scoring 28 goals in 45 games across all competitions.

The current season is Drinan’s most prolific of his career, with his previous best coming for Leyton Orient in 2021/22 in which he scored 16.

Drinan’s last goal came against Accrington Stanley to put his side 2-1 up, before Spireites loanee Luke Butterfield scored an injury-time equaliser.

The gaffer’s record

Paul Cook has only defeated Swindon once in his managerial career, coming on May 1, 2021. That was during Cook’s time at Ipswich Town as they ran out 2-1 victors.

The reverse fixture this season saw Swindon take all three points, inflicting Chesterfield’s first home loss of the season.

Man in the middle

Scott Oldham will take charge of this fixture, assisted by Mark Senior, Harley McKittrick and fourth official Richie Watkins.

Oldham’s only fixture that involved Chesterfield this season was the 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park in October 2025.

Last season, Oldham officiated the Spireites’ opening day draw with Swindon Town at the SMH Group Stadium.

Paul Cook’s thoughts

“I’m just excited, looking forward to the game. Basically, those emotions more than anything else. We’re going down today, just looking forward to the match.

“It’s a great game, against a very, very good side. So, let the winner take the spoils, as they say. Ian’s a very experienced manager. I think he’s got a couple more games than me under his belt, by the way!

“It’s probably Swindon’s biggest home attendance this year. Chesterfield are travelling in great numbers, as everybody knows. So whatever psychological edge people look for by talking is probably irrelevant in my world.”
