Match preview: Walsall (a)

The Spireites make the journey to the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday (3pm) to take on table-toppers Walsall.

Mat Sadler’s team have occupied first place since the start of December and currently hold a seven-point lead over Notts County.

Walsall have struggled for form recently as they are without a win in five games – losing away to Colchester United last time out.

Head-to-head

The West Midlands side have the better of the head-to-head record against Chesterfield, winning 35 of the 95 fixtures. The Blues have recorded 31 victories.

Both sides had to settle for a draw at the SMH Group Stadium back in October. Nathan Lowe put the visitors in front twice, but goals from Darren Oldaker and Dilan Markanday secured a 2-2 draw.

Walsall won the last outing between the two at the Poundland Bescot Stadium; Scott Laird’s 65th minute goal was the difference.

Head Coach – Mat Sadler

Mat Sadler had two spells with Walsall during his 20-year playing career, first joining the club in 2011.

He left a year later before returning in 2019. Over his two stints, the defender played 113 times for the Saddlers and scored four times.

Sadler announced his retirement from playing in 2022 before taking his first step into management a year later – also at Walsall.

The 39-year-old has managed 40 games, winning 25 times and has his side at the top of League Two.

Player-in-focus

Jamille Matt is in his best form for Walsall, sitting on ten goals in 34 appearances this campaign.

He joined the club in January 2023 and has scored 18 times in 87 games since.

Matt has scored four times since the start of 2025, coinciding with Nathan Lowe being recalled by Stoke City.
