Match preview: Walsall (a)

Stadium

The Spireites start their September league action by travelling to the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium to take on Walsall.

The Saddlers currently sit in sixth in the League Two table, having recorded four wins and two defeats from their opening six games.

Mat Sadler’s side have won three on the trot having bested Salford City, MK Dons and Shrewsbury Town.

In the Spotlight

Connor Barrett joined Walsall in the summer of 2024 from National League side AFC Fylde.

He was a mainstay in Mat Sadler’s team last campaign, only missing a handful of fixtures throughout the year.

The full-back has started the 2025/26 season in fine form, sitting at the top of Walsall’s goalscoring charts with two goals.

Barrett, who won the National League North title with AFC Fylde in 2023, was named in the League Two Team of the Season for 2024/25.

The gaffer’s record

Paul Cook will be coming up against Walsall for the ninth time in his managerial career.

He has a record of three wins, one draws and four defeats in the previous eight games – with ten goals scored and ten goals conceded.

Cook and Sadler met for the first time last season; the Walsall boss recorded three wins from the four games played.

Man in the middle

Zac Kennard-Kettle will take charge of his first Chesterfield game when they take on Walsall.

He is the son of former referee Trevor Kettle, who was the man in the middle for 14 Chesterfield matches during his career.

Kennard-Kettle has officiated six games so far this season, brandishing 22 yellow cards and just the one solitary red card.

He has taken charge of 66 fixtures throughout his career, showing 250 yellow cards, four red cards and giving 11 penalties.

Danny Webb’s thoughts

“We played them four times last year and only got one point. Their stats already are showing that they don’t concede many, but they haven’t scored too many either, whereas we’ve scored the most and conceded more than we want.

“We’ve overcome last year’s results at Cheltenham and Harrogate this year, but I think Walsall will be a different test.”
