The reserves fell to defeat on the road in their opening Central League Cup Group Stage fixture, losing 4-0 to Derby County at Moor Farm.
The hosts opened the scoring after 13 minutes, breaking clear of the last line of defence and playing around goalkeeper Tom Everest-Wilcock to afford an easy tap in.
Kondwani Nkhonjera had a great chance to equalise ten minutes before the break after good work from Marcus McKernan on the left, but he was unable to find the back of the net.
The Spireites then thought they’d levelled after Connor Penticost hurried down the right wing and crossed to Louie Ward who converted, but the assistant referee had his flag raised.
The Rams capitalised on a slow start to the second half from Chesterfield and scored again almost immediately from the restart. Everest-Wilcock got a hand to the effort but couldn’t prevent the goal.
Derby made it three shortly after, with a cross from the right turned home from inside the box.
They added a fourth with eight to go, again connecting with a cross coming in from the right.
Substitute Lewis Reah had a great opportunity to pull one back in the dying embers, but frustratingly saw his rebounded effort blocked on its way to the bottom right corner.
