Chesterfield recorded their first home win since returning to the Football League, beating Grimsby Town 2-1. James Berry and Dilan Markanday scored for the hosts with Charles Vernam on target for Grimsby. Darren Oldaker was sent-off midway through the second half.
Grimsby’s Jason Dadi Svanthorsson threatened early on, creating space for himself in the area before seeing his tame shot claimed comfortably by keeper Ryan Boot.
Paul Cook was shown a yellow card in the ninth minute for dissent.
Markanday fired in a low shot which was saved by Jordan Wright before Chesterfield took the lead.
The goal came when Berry (27) whipped in a low free-kick from wide on the left-hand side and the ball went under Wright.
Boot came to his side’s rescue with a save from Svanthorsson, down to his left, after the forward threatened inside the area.
Markanday put Chesterfield further ahead in time added on at the end of the half, firing into the net from six yards out after the defence failed to clear.
Vernam (50) reduced the arrears, firing into the roof of the net after a driving run from midfield.
Chesterfield were reduced to ten men when Oldaker (67) was sent-off after receiving a second yellow card.
There was a triple substitution soon after that with Liam Mandeville, Jenson Metcalfe, Harvey Araujo and Jenson Metcalfe sent on to replace Markanday, Berry and Ollie Banks.
The Spireites went close to adding a third goal in the 79th minute when Lewis Gordon’s header was blocked on the line and Grigg struck the bar from the rebound, with the follow-up blocked.
