“They’ll come here and make it hard”

First-team coach Gary Roberts gave his thoughts ahead of Chesterfield’s final fixture of 2025, with Cambridge United visiting the SMH Group Stadium for a 7:45pm kick-off this evening.

Talking about the opposition, he said: “Since they played us, they’ve changed formations. They had three at the back in the last two and against us they were a four. We’ll watch them again and we’ll work out both formations.

“I don’t think there was too much in the (reverse) game. We weren’t great in the game to be honest and I think it will be a totally different game here.

“They’re right on our tails, a team who don’t lose many games and they’ll come here and make it hard. We’re in a good place, we’re not shouting from the rooftop, but they’re in a good place, our boys.”

On the Spireites’ league position, he added:  “It’s seventh place still. It would have been nice to come in and jump up a couple of places, but it is what it is. We’ve got to just keep concentrating on that next one, as boring as it sounds.

“We’ve got another chance in a home game against Cambridge to go and try and get away from them and try and push up the league.”

Lastly, he praised the support of the fans after the win over Notts County was backed by a sell-out crowd.

“I think our fans will be happy to come back! They haven’t really gone away, but when you’re getting nine to ten thousand, it does make that little bit of difference.

“We really deserved that win (over Notts County). They give everything, our players, and you see at the end when they’re all celebrating together, it’s really nice to see.”
