Role Purpose |
The Deputy Head Grounds Person’s role is to support and assist the Head Grounds Person in maintaining the sports pitches and grounds of Chesterfield Football Club to a high standard and ensuring that the grounds adhere to the relevant policies, Health and Safety legislation, environmental regulations and best practice at all times. |
Role Responsibilities |
- Lead the team in the Head Grounds Person’s absence
- Ensure that the sports pitches and grounds adhere to high standards in relation to Health and Safety legislation.
- Ensure the playing surfaces are maintained to a high standard, undertaking all duties to ensure the best possible playing surface at all times.
- Assist in any strategic action that is implemented when inclement weather or other factors are predicted, to ensure that games go ahead. This may involve frost protection, drainage measures or any other additional action required to ensure games go ahead on schedule.
- Prepare the pitch and grounds correctly for fixtures and other events involving the playing surface.
- Ensure that all machinery is maintained to a safe and adequate standard.
- Maintain the areas around the ground as instructed including any hedges, pathways and the car park ensuring the ultimate safety for the public and good cosmetic appearance. This includes the maintenance of planting programmes and soft landscaping duties.
- Maintain the training pitches to a high standard ensuring that the surface is useable and prepared for training sessions.
- Carry out general maintenance tasks in relation to the playing surface and surrounding areas.
- Uphold a high standard of customer care and attention at all times when dealing with visitors or members of the public to promote the image of the Club.
- Carry out any other tasks as instructed by the Head Grounds person.
- Act as mentor and learning partner to apprentices helping them gain the qualifications needed to have successful career.
- Ensure that any equipment and/or machinery that the Groundsmen utilise in the performance of their duties is in good working order before and whilst using it. Report any issues with such equipment and/or machinery immediately to the Head Grounds Person.
- Be responsible for the other grounds staff in the Head Grounds Person’s absence.

- NVQ Level 3
- Any other sports turf related qualifications

Skills, knowledge and experience |
- Good knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation.
- Maintenance of sports turf
- Knowledge of fertiliser and chemical programmes
- Experience in leading a team
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Good time management skills.
- Trustworthy, reliable and highly focused.
- Good organisational qualities.
- Able to work on own initiative when required.
- Flexibility in hours of work.
- Ability to take instruction and work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
- Full driving licence
