Victory for women’s team

Chesterfield FC Women were back to winning ways today as they came out 1-0 victors against Sherwood at Shirebrook Academy.

The Spireites started well in the first half, enjoying plenty of possession and creating good passages of play.

In the 26th minute, new signing Tia Mcdonagh came on to make her debut and was on the pitch for less than a minute before putting the Spireites ahead. Mcdonagh received the ball on the edge of the area and showed brilliant composure to put the ball onto her right foot and place it perfectly past the Sherwood ‘keeper.

More chances came for the Spireites towards the end of the half. Millie Pinkney came agonisingly close to doubling the lead after pinching the ball from the opposition, just outside the area, but her shot was deflected an inch wide of the far post.

On the stroke of half-time, Steph O’Brien had an effort with her left-foot from outside the area, but the ‘keeper just got her fingertips to it to push it onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

Chances came for the Spireites in the second half and Lucy Graham came close to adding a second in the 53rd minute, but her shot was just wide of a post.

Just five minutes later, Rebecca Lilleyman did well to hold her run and found herself one-one-one with the ‘keeper, but her shot was well saved.

Another chance came in the 76th minute when Graham used her skill to pass three defenders before getting a shot off, but again the ‘keeper did well to get down and save.

A brilliant performance from the Spireites who will look to build on this next week as they face Dronfield at home, in their final game of 2024.
