Webb provides thoughts on performance

Danny Webb spoke to the media following the 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon.

He said: “The supporters, especially over that last ten minutes, really helped us get over the line.

“They want to see skill and flair, but they want to see people running around for their football clubs and I think more times than not, they get that from this set of players, and they certainly got that today.”

Armando Dobra’s early strike was the difference between the two sides and the goal stemmed from a perfect pass to Dilan Markanday from Ollie Banks.

“In those areas we try and get the ball to [Ollie] Banks to spray it… and it’s a great finish from ‘Dobs’” said Webb.

“I keep saying, you can tell lads what to do and set things up but it’s over to them. I thought he [Banks] was like a quarter-back today in a sense of the word, like NFL, when he just gets it deep, and sprays passes and he’s not going to get all of them right but when he does – what a player.”

Wimbledon piled on the pressure and forced Max Thompson into a brilliant save from point-blank range in added time.

“It is great for not just the goalkeeper but the coach [Dave O’Hare] that works so hard with him every day,” added Webb.

“I thought it was a goal… you think at least we haven’t lost, and you try and find some sort of positives with a minute to go but he saves it and fair play to Max, he deserves all of the fans singing his name tonight.”

Ryan Colclough was forced off in the first half through injury and was replaced by James Berry, adding to an already long list of injuries that the Spireites are dealing with.

Webb said: “We can’t beat around the bush; we’ve got far too many injured players. As staff and as a club, we can’t just say it’s all bad luck we have to look for a reason and that obviously takes time to analyse that sort of stuff.”

On Colclough, Webb said: “It looks like he has done his calf, similar to Paddy Madden.

“[Will] Grigg felt a bit tight, but fingers crossed that is just a bit of tightness because he’s running his socks off, as usual.”

The Spireites travel to Fleetwood Town on Boxing Day in the penultimate game of 2024.
