“We’ve just got to control what we can control”

Ahead of the final game of the season, Michael Olakigbe spoke to 1866+ about his time at the club so far and how the side has been preparing for the Accrington Stanley clash.
He began by reflecting on his goal against Morecambe, saying: “It was a good feeling obviously to get on the score sheet and to win the game.
“I was told to get in at the back post and I was just more aggressive. I just wanted the goal more.
“I’ve been creating a lot of chances, getting in the right areas, but I’m just happy obviously now that I’m starting to convert them. I’m in a good rhythm at the moment.”
Speaking about his time at the club, the 21-year-old added: “I’ve enjoyed it. I mean, the manager has had a lot of faith in me. In my last two loans (at Peterborough and Wigan) I wasn’t really given the chance to have that consistency.
“The manager has shown belief and I’ve just enjoyed every minute of it. Hopefully we can get the win on Saturday to end the season very well and get into the play-offs.
“Sometimes in football, confidence plays such a massive part. Coming off the back of my Wigan loan, where I was in and out of the team and sometimes even out of the squad, the gaffer told me he was going to give me the opportunity to just go and enjoy myself and play with that smile on my face.
“We’ve got a big squad and a lot of big characters and I feel like I’ve felt most at home here in terms of settling in. Sometimes coming in January is quite a tough period, but the boys have been unbelievable and I’ve really settled in well here.”
Ahead of Saturday’s big game that could see the Spireites finish in the play-off positions if results go their way, he said: “I think we’ve all got the same goal. Like the gaffer said, we’ve just got to control what we can control and that’s to obviously win at the weekend.
“We just have to hope that the results in other games go the way that we want it to go and then hopefully get in the play-offs.”
