With Liverpool’s U21 team heading to the SMH Group Stadium for Tuesday evening‘s Vertu Trophy fixture, Adam Lewis spoke to 1866+ and talked about his experience of progressing through their academy.
“It was a dream come true (to play for them),” he said. “I spent 19 years there and they gave me the platform to be where I am today.
“For their players, they’ll be looking at us as a tough team. It’s tough as a young lad, you’ve got to approach these games well because if you don’t, you get bullied.
“I’ve been there and done it, I’ve worn those shoes and it is tough, but I think they might come with a bit of arrogance because that’s what it’s like coming from a top team, but if we’re on it, I can’t see them beating us.”
Discussing preparations for the game, the 26-year-old said: “We’ve got a good enough squad to change the team. The lads that haven’t been playing will probably play in that. The squad depth is unbelievable and there are players that can step in and play.
“It’s a trophy at the end of the day. You’ve got to take the game and go into it full strength and that’s what the gaffer’s done in this competition. He’s played very strong teams in the two games we’ve played, so hopefully he does that again and we can get the win.
“Sometimes you’ve got to be selfish and that’s what I’m thinking at the minute. You’ve got to play games, and I’ve got to do well in those games. When I get my opportunity, I’ve got to take it.”
