Chesterfield FC Women got back to winning ways this afternoon, beating Sleetmoor United 2-1 in the Derbyshire Women’s Cup.
The Spireites got off to a great start, having chances through Millie Pinkney and Rebecca Francis in the opening ten minutes.
Despite dominating possession, Chesterfield went a goal down in the 24th minute when a corner came in for Sleetmoor and an unmarked attacker got their head on it to score.
It didn’t take long for the Spireites to equalise though. In the 30th minute, the Sleetmoor keeper picked up a back-pass, resulting in an indirect free kick in the area. Lucy Graham tapped the ball to Steph O’Brien who fired it through the red wall on the line to make it 1-1.
The Spireites came close to going in front in the last few minutes of the half, but Hayley Hulme’s effort rolled agonisingly wide of the far post.
Chesterfield started the second half much like the first with Hulme, O’Brien and Pinkney having a share of chances.
The Spireites took a deserved lead in the 78th minute when a short corner was put into the box for O’Brien to get on the end of for her, and Chesterfield’s, second.
Spireites fans were nearly treated to a Goal of the Season contender a couple of minutes later when Megan Clarkson tried her luck from near the halfway line and hit the crossbar.
The home side continued to dominate the second half and continued to create chances. Hulme did brilliantly in the 85th minute to flick the ball over her, and the defender’s head, before having a shot on goal but the Sleetmoor keeper did well to save.
Rebecca Lilleyman had a couple of chances before the full-time whistle but a last-ditch tackle and the wind made sure it stayed 2-1 to the Spireites.
Next up for the Spireites is an away trip to Grimsby Borough.
