Young keeper reflects on facing boyhood team

Luke Chadwick joined the club last summer. The 19-year-old has seen limited minutes for the first team so far but he regularly played football out on loan or within the club’s youth set-up last season.

He has always been praised by the coaching team for his hard work and dedication in the background.

The young goalkeeper made his home debut for the club in pre-season against Premier League Sheffield United and the boyhood Blade was certainly delighted to be given a run-out.

He said: “To come on against the club I’ve supported and followed my whole life was incredible.

“To come on against any club would’ve been special but your own team and a Premier League side, it was a crazy feeling.

“To be honest, I can’t really describe the feeling. Coming on against Sheffield United made the whole experience more special of course but to come on in front of that crowd was incredible.

“To make my home debut was absolutely fantastic. It was just a mad feeling; all my family and friends were scattered across the stadium so for them to see my come on against the club they all support was surreal.

“Forgetting that for a second, coming on for Chesterfield was a proud moment in itself. This is such a massive club and to get the chance to come on, even for just a few minutes was a dream come true.”

The away end was well aware that Luke is a fan of the club, singing “he’s a Blade” as the youngster entered the pitch.

“I heard the away end singing it and I tell you something that’s probably the best reception I’ll ever get from an opposition crowd,” he said.

“I didn’t expect that reception from the crowd, I think there’s a picture of me just laughing to myself because I didn’t know how to react.

“It’s fair to say I enjoyed it. It’s given me a taste of what I want, it definitely makes me hungrier.

“It was a proud day for both me and my family and I love playing for this football club and really hope to push on now.

“The coaching team, players and everyone at the club are fantastic and I’m really excited for this season ahead.”
