“I love being around good players”

Janoi Donacien has shared his thoughts with 1866+ after signing for the Spireites.

He said: “It feels very good to finally be up here, get it all done and I’m ready to go.

“I’ve been in contact with the gaffer and ‘KD’ [Kieron Dyer]. They’ve been keeping tabs on me and then they reached out and I said: ‘Yeah let’s go’.”

During his time at Ipswich, Donacien played under Paul Cook in the 2021/22 season, when Gary Roberts and Dyer were apart of Cook’s coaching staff.

On working with the trio again, Donacien said: “We spent some time together at Ipswich and they liked me as a player.

“I had some good times [under Cook]. He brought me back in and he helped me out a lot so it will be good to be playing under him again.

“I just like the way he is, he’s very straight forward, tells you how it is, gives you lots of support and he’s very understanding.”

The 31-year-old has been returning from a groin injury and has remained at Ipswich during his rehab following his release in the summer.

He said: “I just need games, so it will be good to get some games played. It’s not hard for me to stay motivated because I love playing football.

“I love playing in front of people, I love being involved with a team and I love being around good players.

“At the start, it’s tough being out and being away from the game, all that sort of stuff.

“The thing I’m looking forward to most is just getting back onto the pitch and showing what I can do.”

The Saint Lucia international has won a League Two title before, with Accrington Stanley in the 2017/18 season, playing 45 of their 46 league games, one of which was at the SMH Group Stadium.

Donacien said: “It’s a tough league to get out of but, once you get the ball rolling, hopefully we can do the same.

“I’ve played once, for ‘Accy’, here [at the SMH Group Stadium and it was good. The crowd was good, it was bouncing, it’s a good place to play football.”

There are a few familiar faces for Donacien in the squad, as well as the coaching staff, to help him settle in quickly at the club.

“I’ve played with Paddy [Madden] at Fleetwood – very good player. I played with ‘Dobs’ [Armando Dobra] at Ipswich when he was younger – very good player as well.”
