“Two points dropped”

Spireites first team coach Gary Roberts felt it was two points dropped the 1-1 home draw to Fleetwood Town on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors had taken an early lead through Will Davies before Dilan Markanday levelled the scores in the first half, and despite a dominant second half, Chesterfield had to settle for a point.

Roberts said: “We didn’t start the game great, and giving them a head start means that they have something to hold on to. It’s a little bit disappointing for us; it’s a poor goal from our perspective.

“But we deserved at least a point. We huffed and puffed, and went for the win, but it just wasn’t to be.”

Roberts was pleased with how the side responded to going a goal down and felt that the performance ultimately deserved three points.

He said: “After the goal, I thought we grew into the game, we played some terrific stuff, and scored a great goal.

“We were probably the team that was looking likely to win it, even though they got us on the break, which you always expect when you attack with numbers.

“We gave everything, but it just wasn’t to be.”

Roberts was delighted with how well the team played defensively and reflected that perhaps the top end of the pitch was not performing to its full potential.

He explained: “I felt that at the top end, we never went in and killed them. We had good moments and got in good positions, but didn’t take advantage. It wasn’t an off day, but we looked perhaps a little goal-shy today.

“We work so hard to get into those areas, but we just needed a little bit more, or a little bit of magic. Just something different.”

Devan Tanton was taken off at half-time, and Roberts shed more light on this move.

He said: “It was tactical. We saw the yellow card, and we couldn’t go down to ten men; we needed 11 players out on the pitch.

“Dev was fine with it; he understood the risk. The way he plays is 100%; he’s into everything. We just had to be careful with that one.”

The result ensures that Chesterfield remain unbeaten at home in the league, a streak that stretches to 13 games, but Roberts was keen to stay focused on the bigger picture.

He said: “We could have gone second with a win, and we wanted to sneak into that top three. The lads have been in a good place this week.

“When we dust ourselves down, we will take the point and stay unbeaten at home.

“But we want to win those games, and the overriding feeling coming away is that it is two points dropped.

“We fancied ourselves to win that game today.”
