“We’ve got to try and join that party above us”

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook spoke to 1866+ before Tuesday evening’s Sky Bet League Two fixture away at Salford City.

He firstly gave his final thoughts on Saturday’s loss at Newport County, saying:  “A really disappointing defeat. Tough afternoon for us, (where we) lost ground on the teams we were trying to chase. Really disappointing for our fans who travelled down (in) great numbers. Amazing support, to be fair to our fans. They turn up regularly, never let us down.

“The goals we give away after half-time are really key in the game. From missing our chances to go in the lead, we then give ourselves a little bit of a mountain to climb. But you must credit Newport. They played with so much hunger, desire and good energy on the day and a little bit of quality as well.”

On what he is expecting from Salford, he said: “Very tough game, very tough game. (They’re) on a fantastic run, an amazing run. Great credit to Karl, the staff and the players. They’re gaining momentum, they’re keeping clean sheets, they’re winning games and I’m sure they can’t wait for the next game.

“For us now, we need to get on that run. We’ve got to try and join that party above us. That’ll see us get where we want to be. It’ll be a really difficult game.

“It’ll be a difficult night. Salford put the ball forward very quickly. They’ve got a direct style of play at the minute and they’re very good at it.”

Lastly, he touched on the support, saying: “We’re a good club, we’ve got great fans, our fans support our players loyally and I’m wanting the players to repay that loyalty with performances.

“I think it’s a two-way street and I think both participants in it are very appreciative of each other.”
