Young Spireites lift NMDFL Trophy

Following the awarding of the North Midlands Development Football League, Chesterfield U21s came from behind to beat Eastwood 7-3, completing their 2021/22 league campaign unbeaten.

Despite a bright start from the young Spireites, Eastwood opened the scoring after 14 minutes, slotting home from a tight angle.

The visitors’ lead lasted only a minute as a dangerous Blakeley cross found O’Connor (15) lurking at the back post, rippling the net from close range.

Minutes later, Murphy’s pressure led to Chesterfield taking the lead as he blocked the goalkeeper’s clearance, who could only watch as the ball trickled into the goal.

With the last action of the first half, Murphy doubled his goal tally on the night, firing in Chesterfield’s third from just inside the penalty box. A fine finish to give the Spireites a two-goal buffer.

Eastwood earned a goal back early in the second half, finishing off a good mood in the 48th minute.

The opposition were pushing hard for an equaliser and found it from a corner routine, smashing the ball home to tie up the game.

With the clock ticking down, newly introduced Coop (77) swept the ball home, with Chesterfield taking the lead in the game once again. A crucial goal in a very tight game.

With Eastwood still fighting, Collier pounced on a defensive error, bursting towards the Eastwood goal before unleashing a beautiful chip over the struggling keeper. Game, set, match?

Well, two goals from Wood and Collier made sure, putting the game out of sight for the visitors.
