On Gateshead

Following Gateshead AFC dissolving in 1977, plans were quickly put in place to immediately start a new club – Gateshead Football Club.

The new club originally started out in the Northern Premier League and won promotion three times by 1990; this also came with three relegations from the Conference by 1998.

Gateshead returned to the fifth tier in 2009 after beating AFC Telford United in the Conference North play-off final.

The Heed built a strong squad for the division and reached the play-off final in 2014 – losing 2-1 to Cambridge United at Wembley with Jack Lester scoring for the Tynesiders.

In 2019, Gateshead were relegated from the National League despite finishing in 17th place. Financial irregularities were listed as the reason for demotion, which gave Aldershot Town a reprieve.

After three seasons in the National League North, a squad led by Mike Williamson stored the league to win promotion back to the fifth tier.

One to watch

Adam Campbell is currently Gateshead’s top scorer this season as he and strike partner Paul Blackett look to replace the void left by Macauley Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott. The striker started out at Newcastle United and was used three times during the Magpies’ 2012/13 Premier League season – alongside Gateshead’s current manager Mike Williamson. A string of loan moves followed for Campbell before joining Notts County on a permanent basis in 2015. He spent two seasons at Meadow Lane but only scored 12 goals in his 85 appearances. A couple of tough spells at Morecambe and Carlisle United came the forward’s way before a move to Darlington in 2019. He scored 22 times in 61 games, which drew the attention of Gateshead. Creating a partnership with the aforementioned Langstaff and Scott, Campbell bagged 14 goals as the Heed won promotion to the National League. He currently sits on five goals so far this season.

Last Time We Met

The teams haven’t met since the 2018/19 season – the only two meetings between the two sides. Towards the end of the campaign, the Spireites travelled to the north-east looking to avenge the 3-0 defeat at the Technique Stadium the previous September. Unfortunately, a Steven Rigg first-half penalty gave the hosts a 1-0 win and secured the league double.

Team News

Branden Horton will miss the game after picking up a red card in the latter stages of the 2-0 win over Boreham Wood. Bailey Clements is expected to make his first league appearance for the club.

Tim Akinola could be in-line to a return to the matchday squad after coming back from international duty with Nigeria.

Lucas Covolan and Ollie Banks will be on the sidelines for a spell with their respective injuries.

Gary Roberts’ Thoughts

Roberts said: “This is a really tough test for us. I watched Gateshead last week at Wrexham, we saw them give Notts County a real tough time and they possibly should have won the game.

“They will cause some problems and Gateshead will open us up at times. On the flip side, we feel we can counteract that. We’ll have our hands full and it should be a good game.”
