Assistant manager Danny Webb has spoken about the capture of Tom Whelan who has today rejoined the Spireites from National League rivals Eastleigh.
Webb holds the midfielder in high regard and believes that he will benefit the squad, especially during a time with multiple injuries.
Webb said: “I think he’s a very good player. He was popular here with supporters and players alike. He’s gone to Eastleigh and played virtually every minute of every game.
“With the injuries we have got, the manager has highlighted that we need to get some bodies in. However, not bodies for the sake of it.
“He takes corners, he takes free-kicks, he takes penalties. He’s been the main man at Eastleigh. We need players that know what they are doing, and Tom is certainly one of them.
“He’s coming to help a team towards the top of the league. He’ll be a great addition and he can play a couple of positions in that midfield area. Wherever the manager decides to use him, I’m sure he’ll benefit the team.”
Whelan first joined the Spireites in December 2020 and helped fire the club to the National League play-offs with five goals in 27 league appearances.
Webb believes that the 25-year-old will bring a breath of fresh air to the Technique Stadium, whilst also adding valuable experience with his prior knowledge of the club.
“He knows the players, the place, the fans and the town. More importantly, he’s coming back to help us.
“He’s a fit and robust lad who knows this league very well. He knows the expectancy of the club and the supporters. He knows the pressures it brings and I’m sure he will embrace it.
“He’s now got ambitions of getting back to a team that is pushing for promotion and that is what we are certainly doing. He’s got great technical ability and work ethic. That’s what he’s got to bring to the table when he steps out onto the pitch for us.”
