“Now is the time the players really need the fans”

Manager Paul Cook reserved some high praise for Phil Parkinson and his Wrexham side before the big midweek clash at the Technique Stadium.

Speaking to the media, he said: “The standard of the league is very impressive for everyone to see. Teams are very well organised and very well set-up.

“They’ve got a very experienced manager in Phil Parkinson. He knows his team and knows exactly what he wants from his team.

“They’ve got a very safe pair of hands at the wheel. Within that they’ve got some very good players.

“They had an excellent come-from-behind win on Saturday, and they’ll be coming tomorrow night backed by a good support. It’ll be a great atmosphere and a game that I’m sure everyone will be looking forward to.”

A total of 7,391 fans packed into the Technique Stadium on Saturday to witness Cook’s first home game back in charge of Chesterfield.

The gaffer sent out a message to fans to continue the big attendances heading forward and spur the players on.

“With the Trust in place, the fans and the town are very much behind the football club. That’s evident by the attendances,” Cook said.

“The attendances over the next couple of weeks are going to be so important because now is the time the players really need the fans.”

Jak McCourt was taken off on a stretcher during the 3-2 defeat to Solihull Moors on Saturday with what looked like a serious leg injury.

Cook gave a brief update on the midfielder, saying: “Until we get the full diagnosis, we probably won’t be commenting on it as much as we should. It was not a good injury for Jak, which is so disappointing.

“We have to go through the procedure with scans. At the minute we don’t think it is a break; we think it is ligament damage.”
