James Rowe is preparing for a tough test tonight when the Spireites travel to Gander Green Lane to face high-flying Sutton United (7pm).
He said: “Matt [Gray] has done a good job at Sutton. He stabilised last year, he’s got some athleticism in there and some structure.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge but one we are relishing. I’m sure we are going to give it a right go and like every game, go for the win.
“They are second and they’ve done really well but I want to put a stop to that. We’ve got to make sure that we manage the game correctly. We’ll be ready.”
Since Rowe has come in, he has instilled his style of play into the team and he is happy with the players’ progress after just nine days.
“I want us to run further at a higher intensity and we’ve done that,” the 37-year-old said. “Some of the players are over nearly 100% on their running stats in the last week, whether that’s training and games together.
“I’m really pleased we have got a full squad to pick from. But first and foremost I felt that we needed to run harder and higher up the pitch.”
Fans have started returning to certain stadiums around the countries with over 1,000 supporters set to be at Gander Green Lane this evening.
Commenting on the situation, Rowe said: “It was quite strange on Saturday when I was there [at Sutton]. It makes a difference. They got right behind their team.
“It’s unfortunate that away fans can’t be there. I’m sure they would have travelled in their numbers, especially with the start that we’ve had.
“It’s great, it’s a game for the fans. Without them it’s not the same and we can’t wait to have the supporters back here at the Technique Stadium.”
