Ahead of the Spireites’ away trip to Wrexham on Tuesday evening, manager James Rowe kicked off the pre-match press conference by reflecting on his side’s defeat to Woking last Tuesday.
Speaking to the media online, he said: “It was a torrential evening in terms of weather, and we didn’t manage the second half well enough. We knew what was coming.
“We just needed to get over the first phases of the second half in terms of not giving so many set-plays away against a physical side.
“That can happen in this league; they fully deserved the win on the back end of that second-half performance.
“We’ve got to take our medicine. We had a little chat in the changing room, and we know we didn’t meet the standards that we wanted to. We’ve got an opportunity now at Wrexham to put it right.”
Wrexham have made many changes to last season’s squad in their quest for a return to the EFL and Rowe is aware they will look to cause problems at the Racecourse Ground.
“They expect promotion; they want promotion,” Rowe said. “They haven’t started as well as perhaps they wanted to.
“They were mightily unlucky on Saturday [against Aldershot]. I’m sure they are itching to get back out there and put it right.
“We’ve got to be aware of that; we know what’s coming. We also know what we can bring. They play for a lot of territory and will ask a lot of questions with forward runs.
“We’ve got to match them. That’s why the physical box needs to come up a lot more than it did in the second half against Woking and I’m sure it will.”
Rowe spoke about who will be available on Tuesday evening as well as a progress update on Akwasi Asante and Jack Clarke.
He said: “We’re going there with a full squad. Manny [Oyeleke] has been training and we’re hopeful for tomorrow. As long as there is no reaction in training today, he will be available.
“Asante is a little bit ahead of schedule. He’s going to go to St George’s Park in the next few weeks to make sure everything is okay now that he has started running and kicking a ball.
“Clarke we are looking at the back end of November still. There’s no difference on that one.”
