Defeat against Wrexham

The Spireites went down to a 2-0 defeat at home to Wrexham.

Two goals from Ollie Palmer were enough to seal three points for the visitors.

Calvin Miller tested the Wrexham keeper Rob Lainton early on, with a strike from range.

Akwasi Asante went close in the 18th minute for the Spireites, with a shot inside the box that Lainton parried away at his near post.

Once again Asante went close following Jim Kellermann’s through ball sent him through one on one, but his effort was saved.

Tom Whelan stung the keeper’s gloves from range; Joe Quigley converted the rebound however the linesman flagged for offside.

Wrexham defender Aaron Heyden tested Scott Loach for the first time in the game, with a tame effort from a set-piece.

Heyden met the ball with his head from a corner just before half time, however, his attempt went wide.

Whelan struck the post directly from a corner kick just before the referee blew for half time.

The Spireites went into the break with the score 0-0.

Asante forced a save from Lainton early in the second halfwith a shot inside the box, Lainton gratefully collected the ball.

Palmer should have put Wrexham in the lead in the 52ndminute with a golden opportunity from six yards out, however he hacked the ball over the bar.

Wrexham had a strong appeal for a penalty when Reece Hull-Johnson seemed to have been brought down by Loach. 

Wrexham took the lead in the 58th minute when Palmer headed a loose ball in the box into an open goal, following a corner.

Whelan tested Lainton with a spectacular effort on the half volley from around 25 yards out.

Once again Asante had a chance to score inside the box, however his effort was straight at Lainton.

Wrexham doubled their lead in the 67th minute, with Palmer’s second of the game. 

He poked the ball in after a goalmouth scramble, following a corner.

Luke Young had a speculative effort for Wrexham towards the end of normal time, but his effort flew over the bar.

The Spireites will hope to get back to winning ways this Saturday, when Yeovil Town visit the Technique Stadium.
