The academy women battled to a superb 2-1 away win against Wath women’s academy on Wednesday to reach the next round of the National Football Youth Women’s League Cup. Goals from Millie Pinkney and Lexie Butterworth sealed the victory.
In an exciting first half, the Spireites took an early lead. With six minutes gone, Pinkney was found in the 18-yard box. She was able to take the ball and fire home into the top left corner to give the visitors the perfect start.
After half an hour, it was 2-0. From close range, Butterworth was able to steer the ball brilliantly into the top left corner to increase Chesterfield’s lead.
Just before the break, Wath hit back. A cross into the box looped into the back of the net to reduce the deficit and give the momentum to the hosts.
Solid defensive work all round limited Wath chances and they were unable to find an equaliser, to the delight of the away support.
The excitement is building as the academy women await their opponents in the next tie.
Watermans Player of the Match and goalscorer, Pinkney, said: “We played really well – it is probably the best game we have played all season.
“Considering how well (Wath) are doing this season, it was a really enjoyable game. The football we played was great.”
Pinkney was delighted with being the star player. She said: “I am very happy. I feel like it was one of my best performances of the season, and I am glad I contributed to the win.”
Looking ahead to the rest of the competition, Pinkney was confident yet humble about the Spireites’ chances of a cup run. She said: “Let’s see how far we can get. This first win has given us a lot of confidence to go further.”
