The Spireites make the trip to Boundary Park on New Year’s Day, and first-team coach Gary Roberts gave his thoughts on the fixture against Oldham Athletic.
He began by reflecting on the defeat to Cambridge United on Monday, saying: “I thought the game swung on moments in the game and we had three big moments in the first half before Cambridge had scored.
“We had to take one of them chances because in a game which is going to be so tight against a team who are so well drilled, you need to take them moments.
“We missed big chances early on. After then, we conceded from one of our set plays, which is not ideal.”
Chesterfield will be looking to bounce back after Monday’s result by securing the three points against Micky Mellon’s side.
He added: “They are a team who have conceded the least goals in the league now. So, I don’t imagine there will be a whole host of goals.
“They’ve played three at the back in the last game, so we’ll work out the system once we get the team.
“But we’ll patch up and see what we’ve got, because we got a couple of knocks on Monday.
“We’ll have a plan and we’ll go to Oldham because we know we’re going to take good support, they’ll have good support. I can imagine it to be a lively game.”
Lastly, Roberts gave the supporters a message as the Spireites enter the second half of the season and a new year.
“Stay with us,” he said. “We always finish our season strong and that’s why we’re preparing now.
“We’re going into this window now to make us as strong as we can for a charge again in our top three.
“Our plans haven’t changed from the start of the season. We feel we’re doing okay. We need all your support. We need everything from them.
“Everyone in the squad, and the coaching staff, we all appreciate everything you’re doing for us, and we need a push from you as well as you need one from us.”
