On Gateshead

Following Gateshead AFC dissolving in 1977, plans were quickly put in place to immediately start a new club – Gateshead Football Club.

The new club originally started out in the Northern Premier League and won promotion three times by 1990; this also came with three relegations from the Conference by 1998.

Gateshead returned to the fifth tier in 2009 after beating AFC Telford United in the Conference North play-off final.

The Heed built a strong squad for the division and reached the play-off final in 2014 – losing 2-1 to Cambridge United at Wembley with Jack Lester scoring for the Tynesiders.

In 2019, Gateshead were relegated from the National League despite finishing in 17th place. Financial irregularities were listed as the reason for demotion, which gave Aldershot Town a reprieve.

After three seasons in the National League North, a squad led by Mike Williamson stormed the league to win promotion back to the fifth tier last season.

One to watch

Adam Campbell is currently Gateshead’s top scorer this season. The striker started out at Newcastle United and was used three times during the Magpies’ 2012/13 Premier League season – alongside Gateshead’s current manager Mike Williamson.

A string of loan moves followed for Campbell before joining Notts County on a permanent basis in 2015. He spent two seasons at Meadow Lane but only scored 12 goals in his 85 appearances.

A couple of tough spells at Morecambe and Carlisle United came the forward’s way before a move to Darlington in 2019. He scored 22 times in 61 games, which drew the attention of Gateshead.

Creating a partnership with Macaulay Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott, Campbell bagged 14 goals as the Heed won promotion to the National League. He currently sits on sevem goals so far this season.

Last Time We Met

Back in November, the two sides met at the Technique Stadium with the Spireites coming out on top. Greg Olley’s long-range drive gave Gateshead the lead on 19 minutes, but Joe Quigley confidentially headed home three minutes later to level things up.

Early in the second half, Jeff King’s free-kick deflected into the path of Liam Mandeville, and the midfielder curled the ball beyond James Montgomery. Chesterfield held out to secure a 2-1 victory under the lights.

Team News

Armando Dobra will not be available for the game against Gateshead after picking up an injury last month against Wealdstone.

Paul Cook said that there will be changes after the Spireites fell to defeat at Wrexham during the week.

From the dugout

Paul Cook said: “All tests are tough. The league is a very demanding league. From Saturday to Tuesday, you’ll come up against that type and that type.

“For us, it’s about getting back to winning ways. It’s first of all making sure we cement a place in the play-offs. That is our target at the moment.”
