John Askey started his career at Port Vale but never played a game for the club before having a stint at Milton United. The winger went on to have a near 19-year career with Macclesfield Town, playing close to 700 games. He then went on to have two spells as manager of the Silkmen where he won promotion back to the Football League. After spells in charge at Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale and York City, Askey was appointed as Hartlepool United manager in February 2023. The 59-year-old could not stop the club from getting relegated into the National League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Born in Chesterfield, Bob Newton started his career at Huddersfield Town before making the move to Hartlepool United in 1977. The forward spent five years in the North East, playing over 150 times and scoring 48 goals.

In 1983, Newton joined his hometown club, Chesterfield. He only spent two years at Saltergate but created a fantastic partnership with fellow striker partner, Ernie Moss. In the 1984/85 season, the Spireites won the Fourth Division title.

Newton left the club at the end of the season as he re-joined Hartlepool. This stint lasted for only a year.

View from the dugout

Danny Webb said: “They’re a top side, dangerous in various areas of the pitch so it’s not going to be easy.

“It’s always a tough place to go and without doubt we’ll have to be on it to get anything from the game. We’ll focus on ourselves, as always.”
