Spireites beat FC Halifax Town

The Spireites earned an important three points against FC Halifax Town, with goals from Ollie Banks and Armando Dobra securing a 2-0 win.

Paul Cook named an unchanged side from last Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Woking.

The first chance fell to the visitors within two minutes. Millenic Alli’s cross reached an unmarked Matt Warburton on the far side of the box, but his shot was blocked for a corner.

Warburton went close again soon after. His deflected effort flashed just wide of the Chesterfield goal.

The Blues almost found the lead ten minutes in. Joe Quigley played through Banks, who saw his low effort denied well by Sam Johnson.

Banks had another chance for the Spireites 25 minutes in. The Chesterfield man curled a decent effort from the edge of the area just wide.

A flurry of chances followed for the hosts. A scramble in the box, following Laurence Maguire’s cross, saw Andrew Dallas and Liam Mandeville both have shots blocked by the Shaymen’s defence.

Cook was booked in the Chesterfield dugout following comments shouted at the referee.

Dallas almost found the opener after 40 minutes. His effort from 12 yards, following Jeff King’s low cross, was blocked well by Tylor Golden.

Three minutes into added time, Chesterfield finally found a goal. Maguire’s cross found Banks in the centre of the Halifax box, who headed home the opener for the Blues.

The first half ended with the Spireites leading after a solid opening 45 minutes.

It was a quiet first ten minutes of the second half, with neither side having a major chance to trouble their opposition.

Cook opted to introduce Dobra for Quigley just after the hour mark, with the Spireites hoping to extend their advantage.

Chesterfield doubled their advantage after 71 minutes. Dobra’s introduction proved to be successful, as he got on the end of Mandeville’s cross and guided the ball home after some hesitation.

Paul McCallum became the Spireites’ second substitution, with Dallas making way. Unfortunately, a third change followed soon after as Dobra was forced off through injury. Jes Uchegbulam took his place.

Halifax came close to halving the deficit late on. Alli struck a shot at Fitzsimons, who was there to keep it out and preserve the Blues’ lead.

After an uneventful five minutes of injury time, the referee’s whistle confirmed a crucial win for Chesterfield.
